A Rich History
The farm Syðri-Þverá, named after its location south of the river Þverá, has been in our family for over a hundred years.
A Meeting Place Throughout the Ages
Syðri-Þverá has belonged to the family for over a century, our great-grandparents Guðmunur and Sigurlaug purchased the land in 1911 and farmed and lived here until 1949. At that time Jóhannes and Auðbjörg, our grandparents, took over the farm.
The oldest part of the house was built in 1929 and in 1964 the house was expanded to its current size. The farm was the only place with a phone connection in the area from 1960 to 1983. People from all over would come to be connected to the outside world.
Fun fact, the phone was mounted to the left wall of what is now the dining area. At that time the space served as grandmother’s bedroom. Grandma would kindly get up from her chair or bed and go to another room in the house to give the callers their privacy.
At the time there were hardly any establishments such as cafés or restaurants around. So the house served an important role as a gathering place for the area. People would meet to discuss important matters, play a game of cards together and host all kinds of social events. From weddings to birthday parties and anything in between.
We are very proud that the farm still serves this purpose today. Now as a guesthouse where we welcome visitors from all over the world!
